Important Characteristics of Siberian Huskies

Blog6 - Important Characteristics of Siberian Huskies

Siberian Huskies are dogs with a purpose and a need to belong. They originated in Russia where they were working dogs pulling sleds during the winter months for hunter-gatherers. They are pack dogs and they need to belong to a pack to feel their sense of purpose and belonging is met. The pack doesn’t have to be other Huskies, it can just be your family and other pets. Huskies have many great and beautiful characteristics, but they also need training for some of the less desirable ones. Here are a few important characteristics that every Siberian Husky owner must know.

Adaptability

Siberian Huskies are fairly adaptable to their surroundings. They require space, exercise, and love to adapt successfully to a new environment. It is not necessarily wise for a first-time dog owner to get a Husky as they need to be handled with authority and fairness.

They don’t do well with being left alone for very long. It is better to have other dogs around with which they can play and keep company while you are not there. They should also have some toys to keep them busy otherwise they may get destructive when they’re bored.

They adapt well to cold weather as that is what they’re used to. They don’t adapt as well to hot weather and you should always make sure that your Husky has a cool spot to lie and play during the summer months. Their coats are designed to keep them cool, but hot weather is not their natural habitat and you should take steps to keep them cool and make sure they have access to a lot of drinking water.

Personality

Huskies are family dogs and do well with adults and children. They are also not very suspicious or cautious around strangers as they are not guard dogs. They are lovable and also want to give a lot of love. They are often very sensitive which means they pick up on human emotion and energy and they also sometimes have very expressive eyes.

They also do well with other dogs because they are pack animals. However, smaller dogs and cats may be in danger when their prey drive kicks in. They need to be trained and socialized to not hunt smaller family pets.

Intelligence and Training

Siberian Huskies are extremely intelligent and are often said to be too smart for their own good. They can easily escape confinement if it is not solid. This means a normal fence will likely not keep him in your yard. You will need to take extra precautions and measures to ensure that your Husky doesn’t become an escape artist.

They are fairly easy to train and it is obviously easier when they are younger. They tend to howl a lot instead of bark and you may find a backchat moment here and there.

The last important thing you must know is that Siberian Huskies are very energetic and playful. They need a lot of exercise on a daily basis and it is important to play with them. They will help you get fit through playing with them and exercising them. Sound like a win-win situation to us.
